Tributes to officer who made 'ultimate sacrifice'

Metropolitan Police Federation Chairman Peter Smyth has paid tribute to PC Gary Toms, who died on Friday April 17, aged 37, following an incident in which he was attempting to arrest suspects.

"Gary was a firearms officers who, like his colleagues, bravely faced the ever-present threat of violence," he said.

"He was performing his duty when he received injuries of such severity that they led to his death.

"Our deepest sympathy goes to Gary's wife, Clair, their family, friends and all Gary's colleagues."

An investigation into the exact circumstances of Gary’s tragic death is currently in progress.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, who is also Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said that Gary had made the "ultimate sacrifice" and given his life in the line of duty.

Mr Johnson continued: "As a member of the Met Firearms unit, he would have been only too aware of the danger he faced on a daily basis but was nevertheless diligent in his dedication to the safety of Londoners.

"We must remember that as each police officer begins the day's shift, they can never know what may lie ahead.

"Londoners rely on their courage and selflessness to keep the city safe and we commend and support each and every officer's dedication to fighting crime and making London a safer place for us all."

Met Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said: "This is especially poignant news given that Gary died on the 25th anniversary of Yvonne Fletcher's death.

"It shows us all that the potential dangers officers face when doing their duty are never far away."
