Lest we Forget - WPC Jane Philippa Arbuthnot, Sgt Noel Joseph Lane, Insp Stephen John Dodd
WPC Jane Philippa Arbuthnot, Sgt Noel Joseph Lane and Inspector Stephen John Dodd were murdered on duty by IRA terrorists who detonated a bomb outside Harrods on Saturday 17th December 1983. We will never forget.
At 12:44 a phone call was received by the central London branch of Samaritans. The caller used an IRA password and stated that there were bombs in and around Harrods. He gave the registration plate of a car but gave no other details about the vehicle. At about 13.21 four police officers in a car, a dog handler and an officer on foot were approaching the vehicle when the bomb was detonated. The police car absorbed much of the blast, but six people died, three of whom were civilians. PC John Gordon survived but lost both legs and part of a hand in the explosion.
WPC Arbuthnot and Sgt Lane were killed instantly. Inspector Dodd died of his injuries on Christmas Eve.
Rest in peace.
